The Arctic Circle / ARTICO*

The concept of ÁRTICO* project began in March 2015, when I was noticed I was one of the selected artists to join the THE ARCTIC CIRCLE / Expeditionary Artists Residency  Summer Solstice 2016.

This program consists on a collaborative and interdisciplinary voyage, that brings together international artists of all disciplines and scientists aboard a Barquentine Tall Ship (sailing vessel), through the Svalbard Archipelago in the Arctic Ocean, situated 10 degrees from the North Pole, for a period approximately of two weeks.

During this time, I am going to explore collaborations with other participants and I will continue working on my project ÁRTICO*.

Expeditionary Art Residency

ARTICO* is a visual and sonic essay capturing the shifting impressions of the Svalbard archipelago, an ecosystem of glaciers, icebergs, mountains, and tundra plains. This remote, quiet environment is under constant threat of disappearing, yet it contains an overwhelming wealth of sensory details. Because the landscape offers endless scenarios, the project uses multiple mediums and creative approaches to express them.

The process of preparing for an expedition to an unfamiliar place changes our perception of time. To reflect this, ARTICO * is organized into three distinct phases, I called movements. Each movement matches the changing tempo of a musical piece, using the artist residency as its central point of reference.


ARTICO*, a project in three movements:

Movement I: Largo [ Anticipation ]
The time leading up to the expedition moves slowly and unevenly. This phase focuses on the abstract imagination of a remote, unvisited space. The creative output relies on archival research, conceptual mappings, and structural blueprints to represent the psychological wait.arctic archipelago.


Movement II: Vivo [ The Experience ]
The residency itself brings a fast, intense, and hyper-detailed collision with the landscape. The focus shifts to immediate sensory capture in Svalbard. This phase utilizes direct field recordings, hydrophone audio, and high-definition photography to document the active movement of glaciers and the tundra ecosystem.


Movement III: Resonare [ The Echo ]
The period following the expedition is reflective and fading. It mirrors the environmental reality of a landscape condemned to disappear and the natural decay of memory. The work transitions into fragmented visuals, decaying audio loops, and multimedia installations that explore loss and aftermath. Composing through memory.
