Ana Carvalho

Ana Carvalho is a visual artist and designer who lives and works in Lisbon. After years of working exclusively in the digital field, and following a brief but significant contact with ceramics around the age of twenty-five, she has been reconnecting with this discipline.

This practice emerges as an extension of her visual universe and her relationship with paper, enhancing it through its plasticity and a three-dimensionality rooted in constant and experimental research.

Her work focuses on the reinterpretation of the organic and natural world, exploring its macro and micro scales and relationships, with a strong connection to memory through elements of scientific illustration. Her trajectory includes participating in the prestigious artist residencies The Arctic Circle (off the coast of the Svalbard archipelago, 2016) and Labverde (Amazon, Amazon forest) - fundamental experiences for the consolidation of her visual and conceptual research around extreme landscapes, making ecological themes an inherent part of her practice.

Over the last few years, the artist has presented her work in several exhibitions, consolidating her presence in the contemporary art scene. Her exhibition path alternates with periods of intense creation and maturation in the studio, where drawing and painting emerge as the generative matrices of her visual thinking. These two-dimensional practices serve as a vital bridge between the rigor of her work as a digital designer - still present but now more distant—and the freedom of raw material.

Currently, she focuses her research on transitioning from the line, the stain, and the rigidity of the pixel toward the tactile three-dimensionality of clay. The fluid gesture and expression of painting and drawing are transposed onto the surface of the pieces, creating new volumes and textures. Her current production thus materializes a symbiosis where pictorial and graphic elements lay the groundwork for abstract ceramic pieces, deeply connected to the infinite organic landscapes observed at different scales in nature.
